Being a working mom is hard. A couple of years ago I used to think that just working five days a week was hard, but I never would have imagined having to work and be a mom to two beautiful girls would be this hard!
I work Monday through Friday, from 7 am until 3:30 pm. Some days I work from 8:30 am to 5 pm because my kids like to wake up early some days and scream their heads off when they realize that I am about to leave. I try my best to get them to calm down before they wake up one another or daddy after he has just went to sleep after a long night at work. So if you are a working mom that’s probably something that you will deal with from time to time. Especially if they have went to sleep early the night before.
I work for a non-profit mental health program as a medical records clerk and it is tedious work. It requires a ton of attention to detail, lots of data-entry, and sitting for long periods of time. By the time that I get off from work, my back and butt are aching, I’m mentally exhausted, and in need of a good nap.
But my day doesn’t slow down once I get home!
As soon as I walk through the door, my one and two year old’s come running to give me hugs and kisses, we go into the play room, watch a movie and play until it’s time for dinner. Or we practice our ABC’s, numbers and words (my two year old was pre-mature and she doesn’t know as many words as most children so I am working with her to help with her development). It is one of my favorite things to do to unwind after work.
My kids make me so happy and they make me feel like I’m the best mom ever with all of the love that they show me when I get home. It’s hard for me to remember a life without them.
After playing with the kids for an hour or two (depends on what time I get home), I get up to start cooking dinner. This is the rough part of my day. It takes about an hour for me to make dinner and the whole time I have dogs that like to stand around me waiting for me to drop something for them to eat (there has been plenty of times that I have tripped on one of them and it drives me nuts). I recently hat to start locking them in the back yard until dinner is done because them standing around while I’m cooking is really dangerous. Not only do the dogs stand around while I’m cooking but my kids do too sometimes. I can usually get my two year old to just play with her toys at the dinner table and she will be fine and entertained until dinner is done. But my one year old…
Boy oh boy. She likes to cry the entire time that I am cooking. Normally she is super independent and just likes to do her own thing, but when she knows that there is food being made she goes absolutely nuts! She cries and cries and cries until she finally get some of the food.
Believe me you guys we do not starve her lol she eats plenty and I often have to limit her even though she still acts as if she wants to eat. I’m sure that if we allowed her to eat as much as she wants, she would eat until she throws up and that’s the last thing I want. Plus we do not want her to get obese or anything like that. She just really loves food.
Some nights, the girls both scream their heads off while I cook and some nights I just let them have cereal for breakfast because I had a rough day at work or I am not feeling too well. It’s okay to have days like that.
After we have all eaten dinner, it’s bath time. I spend about an hour giving my girls a bath, washing them up, shampooing their hair, letting them play with their toys for a bit. The usual. Once i take them out, I lotion their bodies, put their PJ’s on and it is time for bed!
We go lay down in my bed and we watch a movie or play around for a little bit longer and then they are out like a light. It usually takes no longer than an hour for the girls to fall asleep after I have given them a bath so I’m very grateful for that.
Normally I do these things on my own because my fiance works graveyard at the moment, but other than that it’s nothing I can’t handle when I’m alone.
Once I put the kids in their own beds, I like to spend a little time to myself. I take a shower and pamper myself a bit, watch TV, or read a book and then take my butt to sleep.
So that is a typical day for me as a working mom. What does your everyday routine look like? Let me know down in the comments and I’ll see you in my next one!
